Peter Clemons and Marianne Benson opened the Backshore Gallery at 394 Commercial Street in the summer of 2003. The name Backshore was chosen because that's where Peter has painted many of his gouache originals. Peter's studio is a historic dune shack called the Grail. It is located near the former site of the Peaked Hill Bars lifesaving station once owned and lived in by the playwright Eugene O'Neill.
After 7 amazing Provincetown summers Backshore Gallery is now closed but continues to exist virtually, exhibiting the art of Peter Clemons. Backshore Gallery's exhibitions have been warmly received over the past years and appreciated by both the Cape Cod vacationers and its art community. In addition to showing works by Peter Clemons the gallery also exhibited the art of David Forest Thompson, Richard Stimpson, Walter Baranowski and Tommy Clemons.
David Forest Thompson is a self-taught artist, working mostly with oil on canvas or board. David is also a very talented photographer who relates to his photographs as potential paintings, some of his photos actually end up on canvas. http://www.davidthompsonart.com/
Richard Stimpson paints landscapes and New England architecture. Richard is a full time architect in Cambridge but has always maintained an interest in painting. We loved working with Richard and we are thankful we had the opportunity to exhibit his work.
Walter Baranowski works with wood, driftwood from the backshore in particular. His clocks and chairs wowed everyone who visited the Backshore Gallery. His artwork is simply beautiful, simply elegant, simply Walter, see for yourself: www.driftwooddrift.com
Tommy Clemons makes inventive statements in wood and found materials. Yes, he is our son; that gets him in the door but it is his talent that kept him on the walls. You will be seeing his work around Provincetown and as soon as his website is completed we will add a link to it here.
